GM Technical Information and Diagrams: 4L80E
GM 4-Speed RWD
Electronically controlled, automatic overdrive transmission with
TCC
1991-Present
Production of the 4L80E transmission began in 1991. The 4L80E is
easily the most powerful GM RWD transmission on the market today.
The 4L80E is a redesigned, fully electronic version of the former
TH400 transmission that was produced from 1969-1986.
The GM 4L80E is only used in heavy-duty GM applications, notably
the Tahoe, Subarban, Excursion, Hummer, GMC Sierra, GMC Savana, C/K
Pickups & heavy-duty Chevy Vans. The 4L80E is also used in school
bus & motor home applications. Foreign applications include Aston
Martin & Rolls Royce.
There are 3 interchange rules for the 4L80E. First year of
production, 1991, is by itself. 1992-1996 interchange, and
1997-Present interchange.
Performance parts are readily available, but not much has to be done
to these transmissions to allow them to handle 600+ HP. Not cheap,
but the 4L80E is a great transmission swap for extreme duty muscle
car restorations and for drag racing applications that want to
retain overdrive.
